Weber Innovation High School  |  1007 West 12th  St,  |  Ogden, Utah 84404

nickHarrisI am thrilled and honored to be the new principal of Weber Innovation High School. As soon as I knew I was going to be the principal I started studying each student’s class load, schedule, credits, GPA and attendance. I’ve also looked at each teacher’s class load, number of assignments as well as our school’s average GPA, and number of “F’s” earned so far.

After all of this research I can say with excitement that this school truly is something special! I certainly hope each one of you (teachers and students) recognize just how lucky we all are to be a part of this amazing experience. I very much look forward to working with Mr. Raymond, an excellent administrator, Ms. Hancock, an excellent counselor, and Mrs. Pilot, an amazing head secretary, to make sure each one of you has the support you need to reach the goals you’ve set (and then go a little further). We don’t want to waste one second on this great opportunity in front of us. I can’t wait to get to know each one of you and find out how I can help you earn the credits you’ve committed to earning and get your sights set on an excellent college or career.

One of my favorite books contains a quote that truly reminds me of what this school is all about. The book is Farenheit 451, written by Ray Bradbury. The quote I love comes toward the end when the main character, Montag, is talking to a man named Granger (that actually remembers ‘books’ and the things written in them). Granger says to Montag, “I hate a Roman named Status Quo! ...Stuff your eyes with wonder…live as if you'd drop dead in ten seconds. See the world. It's more fantastic than any dream made or paid for in factories. Ask no guarantees, ask for no security, there never was such an animal!”

Status Quo is Latin, meaning ‘the current state of affairs.’ In other words, if things are ‘status quo’ they are the same as they’ve always been. Granger, therefore, doesn’t like ‘status quo’. He wants Montag to ‘stuff his eyes with wonder,’ LIVE, and do something amazing! His point is great. Students, like Montag, you are NOT ‘status quo.’ Your education here at WIHS isn’t ‘status quo.’ You are literally out there, ‘stuffing your eyes with wonder’ whether you realize it or not.

Much like Bradbury and his character Granger, I also am not OK with ‘status quo.’ That is why I’m so thrilled to be on this journey with you. I look forward to watching each of you work hard, grow and succeed! We’re going to accomplish amazing things!

Sincerely,

Nick Harris
Principal

We will have our first Parent/Teacher Conference on Wednesday, September 28th from 12:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., here at the Innovation Center. School will be dismissed on this day at 11:45 a.m.. Between now and then, please get with your student(s) and see where they are at in their various classes. As we have stated before, our method of delivery here at Weber Innovation High, includes multiple platforms and learning management systems (LMS). This can be hard to keep up with, but your students understand it and know the routine well so please talk with them and have them show you where they are in their classes. With the early college classes, we do not have monitoring access so it is even more crucial that you talk with your student if they are taking college courses and that you help them keep up and do well.

Last Thursday and Friday we had our first annual chalk art festival!  Creativity and stretching our artistic minds is a big priority of our learning here and this was a great opportunity for students and staff to do just that.  We appreciate Ms. Stacy Harris for organizing the event. Watch the video on the left recorded by Mr. Garry Davis and one of our PLTW Drones. Have a great week and we will see you next week at Parent/Teacher Conference!

The school year is now officially on!  We were so glad to get the students back and see all of their smiling faces.  What a difference a summer can make!  We have doubled our enrollment from last year and are looking forward to seeing our first Senior Class graduate this spring. This year we will be making a transition in our digital curriculum to a much more interactive Design Learning format.  We believe that students learn best by doing and not by passive absorption.  In order to accomplish this, we will be operating in several formats, Edivate (same as last year), Canvas (new this year), Moodle(same as last year) and our regular face time, traditional delivery method.  We will be sending out multiple emails to give you directions on how to monitor the progress of your students, please call the school if you are having trouble.  Personalized Learning takes a commitment by the student to OWN their education and it is our job to provide every opportunity for students to be able to do that while here at Weber Innovation.  All of our students have a program called Own It in their Edivate.  This is an outstanding learning experience that teaches students how they can really take hold and own their education and future.  In addition to Own It, all students will be assigned an adult mentor.  These mentors will be personally working with your student to help them keep on track and progressing.  It is going to be a great year and we will be rolling out the red carpet for all of our students, every single day!

Summer is moving along fast and before we know it school will be starting!   As our Mission Statement at Weber Innovation High indicates we are committed to providing the absolute best college and career ready education for our students through personalized learning and the opportunity to advance at their own pace.  Last year was a fantastic first year.  We were able to become accredited, our students finished at least 1.5 credits ahead of pace, our students earned over 250 college credits and our average ACT college placement score was second in the district at 19.4.!  There is a lot to be excited about and the future is bright at WIHS!

In June our faculty attended a specialized training at Stanford University’s prestigious dSchool,

a branch of Stanford’s Engineering School, and was trained in Design Learning.  We will be incorporating much of the innovative and creative principles of Design Learning within our Personalized Learning Curriculum which will provide our students with more project based learning opportunities and skills relevant to life after school.  It is going to be a great year!

We are still accepting students for the 2016-17 school year but only have 10-20 spots available so hurry and get your enrollment application in by clicking on this enrollment link.

Have a great rest of the summer!

Summer Session is in full swing, in fact we only have a few days left.  We have had a great learning experience with our new students, as well as many of our returning students over the past few weeks!  It has been a great time for students to get ahead with credits earned toward high school graduation and earn some college credit.  We want to wish everyone a great rest of the summer and remind all of our fall orientation date on August 2nd at 6 p.m. here at the school, for new students and then we will have general registration for the 2016-17 school year on Wednesday August 11th, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., for all students.  Be safe and have a great summer.
