As we approach the mid-point of the school year, it is apparent that the Career and Technical Education (CTE) team has done an amazing job working to ensure that our students are prepared for the career pathway they have chosen. Our team has been working with business partners and other stakeholders to provide a multitude of opportunities and resources to help students determine the best path for them. It is our job to ensure that our students are ready for their future education and careers. As our world changes and society is faced with advancements in technology, medicine, manufacturing, agriculture, construction, transportation, food service, law enforcement and other areas, CTE often meets this educational challenge through their capstone courses taught in the Magnet Programs. Teachers have developed state-of-the-art curriculums, aligned materials with advanced competencies, established liaisons with business partners and universities, and helped students reach their career pathways goals. Currently there are nine (9) Magnet Programs:

• At the Weber Innovation Center
  o Apparel Design and Production Magnet
  o Criminal Justice Magnet
  o Intro to Physical Therapy Magnet
  o Project Lead the Way Magnet
• At Bonneville High School
  o Advanced Health Science Magnet
• At Fremont High School
  o Advanced Health Science Magnet
• At West Haven Elementary
  o Intro to Education Magnet

Next school year at the Weber Innovation Center, CTE will introduce a new Magnet Program, Interactive Computer Arts (ICA).

Career and Technical Education (CTE) has an important mission to accomplish in the Weber School District and at the Weber Innovation Center. Our goal is to open the eyes of our students to the amazing pathways available to them in CTE. We want them to “see the light” in their personal lives and set themselves on a pathway to prosperity and happiness in their career choice. We use the phrase “College and Career Ready” a lot in education. Most people think of a four year college as the goal for their children and there is nothing wrong with that. But what about the multitude of other options available which lead to satisfying and rewarding careers? Skilled workers with specific training are in short supply in the United States. And locally, many employers are not able to hire workers with the skills needed to help them grow their businesses. One local employer who has a machining company told me recently that if he could find enough skilled machinists, he could double the size of his workforce and add on to his facility today. And these jobs pay very well for those with the right training and skills. Where are the skilled workers? Why aren’t they available? Is a four year degree for everyone? What other “college” training opportunities are out there? Can these skilled training certificates and 2 year degrees lead to a successful career and awesome lifestyle? Hopefully you will begin to understand that so many opportunities are available to your children for college and career preparation and that a four year degree is only one option. Again, CTE’s mission is to help students catch the vision for themselves of what their future holds. We want to help them discover their talents and passions…and then to learn the things that will bring them happiness and financial success the rest of their lives.
