Weber Innovation — An Early-College High School

2018-2019 Trustland Final Report

Current Goal

The majority of Weber Innovation High School students will be at least on pace for graduation and will gradually move ahead of pace as they learn to personalize their learning through both traditional and digital/blended instruction.

This is the measurement identified in the plan to determine if the goal was reached.

All students, on average, are 1 credit ahead of pace at WIHS. However, there are some over-achievers that pull the underachievers up, so it is not a true, across-the-board measurement. We do expect this indicator to grow and be more relevant over time. We also run regular reports listing where students are in terms of credit earned. Credit earned is a very easy and applicable measurement and works well for us to gauge student progress for the above goal. In addition to averages, we will also monitor progress by measuring the number of actual students ahead, on pace and behind credit-wise at the start of the year. Then, we'll measure the same credit again at the end of the year to gauge progress.

A comparison of students behind pace in October of 2018 was compared to those students behind pace in May of 2019.  The data showed the following progress with very positive results from our trustland expenditures and plan:

Steps

This is the Action Plan Steps identified in the plan to reach the goal.

A big part of helping the individual student is to be able to provide one-on-one time with a teacher and/or tutor. We will use the trustland funds to continue to pay the salary of one or possibly two tutors in Math and/or Social Studies and/or Science. In addition, we will continue to pay a Student Advocate to help reach our goal of moving our population credit average ahead. We can use a student advocate to help identify those at-risk students, set academic goals with the students and then follow up to make sure the students reach the goals they have set in their classes. The final way we will reach our goal is to use Trustlands funds to help pay for a Foreign Language teacher. We have surveyed our students and find that one of the struggles they have is having to go off campus for their foreign language credit. Having a FL teacher on-site will mitigate that and help us reach our credit goal stated above.

Please explain how the action plan was implemented to reach this goal.

Steps of Action Plan

We used our trustland funds to pay for 2 student advocates who worked directly with those students who fell behind in credits and pacing in classes.  We also hired 2 Weber State math tutors since many students fell behind pace in this particular curricular area and is why we added to our trustland plan the addition of math aides.  We did amend the foreign language teacher position on our plan last year so that portion of the plan is not applicable.
